چکیده

We have detected weak soft X-ray emission from the Pulsar Wind Nebula trailing the high velocity star PSR 2224+65 (the ‘Guitar Nebula’). This X-ray flux gives evidence of γ ∼ 10 eV particles in the pulsar wind and constrains the properties of the post-shock flow. The X-ray emission is most easily understood if the shocked pulsar wind is partly confined in the nebula and if magnetic fields in this zone can grow to near equipartition values.

On the X-ray feature associated with the Guitar Nebula

Context. A mysterious X-ray nebula, showing a remarkably linear geometry, was recently discovered close to the Guitar Nebula, the bow-shock nebula associated with B2224+65, which is the fastest pulsar known. The nature of this X-ray feature is unknown, and even its association with pulsar B2224+65 is unclear. Aims. We attempt to develop a self-consistent scenario to explain the complex phenomen...

Bow Shocks from Neutron Stars: Scaling Laws and Hst Observations of the Guitar Nebula

The interaction of high-velocity neutron stars with the interstellar medium produces bow shock nebulae, where the relativistic neutron star wind is confined by ram pressure. We present multi-wavelength observations of the Guitar Nebula, including narrow-band Hα imaging with HST/WFPC2, which resolves the head of the bow shock. The HST observations are used to fit for the inclination of the pulsa...

High velocity structures in , and the X - ray emission from the LBV nebula around η Carinae

The Luminous Blue Variable star η Carinae is one of the most massive stars known. It underwent a giant eruption in 1843 in which the Homunculus nebula was created. ROSAT and ASCA data indicate the existence of a hard and a soft X-ray component which appear to be spatially distinct: a softer diffuse shell of the nebula around η Carinae and a harder point-like source centered on the star η Car. A...

XMM - Newton Detection of X - ray Emission from the Bipolar Planetary Nebula Hb 5

We report the serendipitous detection by the XMM-Newton X-ray Observatory of an X-ray source at the position of the Type I (Heand N-rich) bipolar planetary nebula Hb 5. The Hb 5 X-ray source appears marginally resolved. While the small number of total counts (∼ 170) and significant off-axis angle of the X-ray source (∼ 7.8) precludes a definitive spatial analysis, the morphology of the X-ray em...
